Land Resources /Ecological-Economic Zoning

1987 - up to now
• Regional application of AEZ (Agro-ecological Zoning) is now in progress through:
• Assembly of updated material for the Soil Map of Latin America, as the first stage in updating the Soil Map of the World, several letters of agreement have been signed by FAO and member countries for this purpose: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Venezuela;
• A training course on Agro-ecological Zoning methods has been held together with RLAC in Santiago in 1992 and ;
• Technical backstopping to the Pro-Tempore Secretariat (PTS) of the Amazon Co-operation Treaty member countries (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Surinam and Venezuela) since the beginning of 1989. FAO's support consist in defining and formulating programmes and projects for the Special Commissions on Environment (CEMAA) and Science and Technology (CECTA).

1989 up to now
• Development of a practical and quick methodology adapted to FAO Soil and Climate Database linked with GIS for identifying soil management and fertility constraints in different climatic regions of the developing world. Sample work has been distributed to the World Resources Institute, CIAT, IRRI and to the FAO Regional Offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America . The development of a model programme which uses databases, and which has a capability to evaluate the natural soil fertility in an automated form is now in progress.
